Funeral directors – Who are we?

How do funeral directors define who they are? We are funeral directors; a handful of less than one hundred funeral service professionals on Prince Edward Island, who provide dignity for the deceased and care and comfort for their families.

We are well-trained individuals who invest, not only in continuing education, but ongoing day-to-day learning.

The funeral directors of MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel abide by a code of ethics, both personal and professional. We are partners, parents, children, and friends.

We represent a strong tradition of service, that began with our founder the late N. D. MacLean, one of PEI’s first professionally trained funeral directors.

We are committed to making our community a better place.

As I sat down to write this post, I thought of the final scene from The Breakfast Club (1985) where the students submit their essay in which they were asked to define who they think they are.

“You see us as you want to see us—

in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions.

But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain…and an athlete…and a basket case…a princess…and a criminal.

Does that answer your question?”  – Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club

It begged the question:  how do you see funeral directors?

For the most part, funeral directors are viewed with respect, but there are those long-standing images that continue to prevail:  older, male, somber, detached.

While some of our staff may fit a few of those descriptors, we hope that you will take the time to talk with us, learn about who we are and what is meaningful to us. You’ll find that the same things are meaningful to you:  respect, dignity, care, family.

We hope this blog will offer insight into our profession, and who we are as individuals.

We’ve responded to this call to service out of commitment to care for our friends, family and community.

Sincerely yours,

The staff of MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel
